Over the past several months in my field experiences, I have built a deeper understanding of how differentiated instruction positively impacts student engagement and learning outcomes. As part of my clinical assignment, I designed a lesson on the causes of World War I where my goal was to create a standards-based, measurable lesson that addresses students’ readiness levels, interests, and learning styles, while incorporating technology effectively. 1. Selection of Instructional Strategies From my classroom observations and prior field reflections, I noticed that students struggled with abstract analysis and historical vocabulary, especially when lessons lacked visual supports or interactive scaffolds. Understanding how students learn is the first step toward planning instruction that meets their needs. In our field experience classroom, we administered the VARK Learning Styles Inventory to five students identified as needing additional support. The VARK model classifies learners into four primary modalities: Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. Using pseudonyms for confidentiality, we analyzed student responses and matched them with data provided by the mentor teacher on developmental and performance trends. The data from the assessment shows that two students—Derek and Noor—identified strongly as Kinesthetic learners. One student, Janelle, scored highest in Visual, while Emmanuel demonstrated a mixed preference between Read/Write and Aural, and Sara leaned primarily toward Aural. As a 9th-grade History teacher, I’m constantly looking for ways to better support the diverse needs of my students. Many of them come from bilingual households, have varying levels of academic readiness, and respond to instruction in very different ways.  To meet those needs and create more personalized learning experiences, I rely heavily on technology. The right tools allow me to differentiate not just what I teach, but how students engage with it and how they show what they know. Here are five platforms I use (or plan to implement more deeply) that have made a real difference in my instruction and student engagement. 1. Quizlet Quizlet allows me to create digital flashcards, vocabulary decks, and review games tailored to each unit or student group.
